A species of Tricholoma, Also known as Canary trich
The thick, squat yellow knight mushroom sometimes grows into a saddle-shaped cap. This species is distinguished in the field from the Sulphur Knight mainly by its own lack of a distinctive smell. Older guides may list these mushrooms as edible, but they have been linked to several confirmed poisoning cases in which their toxins had caused painful muscle damage.

Is Yellow knight Toxic?
Yellow knight has been linked to cases of rhabdomyolysis, a condition characterized by muscle damage and weakness, pain, stiffness, darkening of urine, and periods of nausea and sweating. Symptoms typically occur after consuming the mushroom in several meals over a two-week period. The toxic compound causing these symptoms has not yet been definitively identified. Although yellow knight is mycorrhizal with pines and found widely across North America, reports of poisoning are primarily from Europe, leading to speculation about possible species differences. Some instances of yellow knight poisoning have resulted in fatalities.

Poisoning Symptoms
One of the most common symptoms is severe muscle pain, tenderness, and weakness, especially in the shoulders, thighs, or lower back.
Degradation of muscle tissues leading to severe muscle soreness and fatigue.
General malaise including loss of appetite and feelings of dizziness.
Elevated body temperature accompanied by excessive sweating.
Dark-colored urine, indicating potential muscle breakdown products in the bloodstream.
Potential heart inflammation (myocarditis) and breathing difficulties.
Risk of fatal outcomes, particularly with repeated exposure or high consumption, due to possible kidney and heart complications or respiratory failure.

Search around coniferous trees, especially pine forests, where these mushrooms are likely to form symbiotic associations.
Inspect the base of trees and look for scattered or grouped yellow knight, particularly where the ground is sandy.
Gently probe the sandy soil with a stick or your fingers to uncover any yellow knight that might be partially buried.
Examine areas with less dense vegetation, as this may indicate the sandy soil conditions preferred by yellow knight.
