Is the Hymenogastraceae poisonous?
Some mushrooms in the Hymenogastraceae family contain hallucinogens, such as dung-loving psilocybe (Deconica coprophila), which can cause hallucinations when ingested. There are also a few deadly-toxic mushrooms in this family, such as marginate pholiota (Galerina marginata) and many of its congeners, which can cause severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, and emesis, and such symptoms can last from six to nine hours. In addition to those symptoms, the toxins can severely affect the human liver and cause gastrointestinal bleeding, coma, kidney failure, and even death. Such symptoms usually appear within seven days after consumption. There are also many other toxic mushrooms in this family, all of which you should not collect or eat when found. If you experience discomfort after ingestion, seek medical help as soon as possible.
