The spotted toughshank (Rhodocollybia maculata) is a fairly nondescript mushroom that is widely distributed across North America. The species' name is derived from the brown or cinnamon speckling that appears on the caps of mature individuals - young fruiting bodies may be mostly plain, however. They thrive on decomposing wood or leaf litter.
