Description

Sparria is a unique genus of crustose lichens known for their ability to grow on rocks. These lichens form crust-like thalli that adhere closely to their rocky substrates, often in exposed or harsh environments. Chemically, species within sparria are notable for containing lecanoric acid, and some species also produce erythrin, another secondary metabolite. These compounds may play roles in protecting the lichens from environmental stressors, such as UV radiation or herbivory, and can also be of interest for their potential biological activities.
