Description
Tar spot is known for creating distinctive black, tar-like spots on the leaves of certain trees, especially maples. These tar spots can be quite noticeable but generally don't harm the tree significantly. The black patch is actually a fungal growth that becomes more prominent as the season progresses, often seen in late summer and fall. Observing these spots provides an interesting insight into the complex and often overlooked interactions between fungi and plant hosts.
