The liberty cap is a small, fairly nondescript species that sports a minute, cone-shaped cap and a thin, often squiggly stalk. The species grows in temperate grasslands in the northern hemisphere and may have a few disparate populations in South America as well. Unlike other species in the Psilocybe genus, liberty cap is rarely found growing directly out cow paddies or other dung.
