Description
Porostereum are fascinating fungi known for forming thin, crust-like layers on decaying wood. They play a crucial role in forest ecosystems by breaking down dead plant material, thus recycling nutrients back into the soil. Some species within this group have unique enzymes that make them particularly efficient at decomposing lignin, a complex part of plant cell walls. Their often wavy and smooth surface can help identify them in the wild.
