Scientific name: Ophiostomatales
Description
Ophiostomatales are microscopic fungi known for their unique spore-dispersal method. They produce sticky spores at the tips of long, hair-like structures. Many species in this group form symbiotic relationships with bark beetles, which carry the spores to new trees. Some ophiostomatales cause tree diseases, including Dutch elm disease, which has devastated elm populations worldwide.
