The grooved bonnet is one of a few dozen Mycena mushrooms that are bioluminescent. It is rare in North America but can be found throughout Europe and Japan in deciduous forests of oak or maple trees. In these forests, the mushroom, which is not edible, decomposes organic matter and supports nutrient-rich humusy soil.
