Description
The mushrooms of this species grow in such tight clusters that they may cover fallen trees and stumps almost entirely in a brownish, puffy coat. Pear-shaped puffballs appear all around the northern hemisphere on decaying hardwoods from fall through winter.

As with other Puffballs, pear-shaped puffball is considered edible when young and while the inner flesh remains white. Check for a marshmallow-like texture and inspect for any yellowing. Use extreme caution as the pear-shaped puffball is easily mistaken for Common Earthball, which is highly toxic.
