Description
Ergots is known for infecting cereal plants, especially rye, producing dark, hardened structures. Historically, these fungi were infamous for causing outbreaks of ergotism, also known as St. Anthony's Fire, due to toxic alkaloids. Interestingly, compounds derived from ergots have been used in medicine, particularly for inducing labor and treating migraines. These fungi have a fascinating relationship with their plant hosts and a complex life cycle involving both sexual and asexual reproduction phases.
