Sooty mold fungi are a fascinating group often found on plant surfaces. They form dark, velvety patches which look like soot, hence their name. These molds don't harm plants directly but grow on honeydew excreted by insects, like aphids. Some species within this group have adapted to extreme environments, including highly saline soils and thermal springs, showcasing their remarkable resilience.
