Description

Arthopyrenia is a group of small, inconspicuous lichens that often grow on smooth tree bark. They form thin, pale crusts that can be easily overlooked. These lichens have a unique relationship with certain fungi, which penetrate the algal cells in a way that's different from most other lichens. Some species in this group can be indicators of air quality in forest ecosystems.
