Description

The spring coccora (Amanita vernicoccora), as the name suggests, erupts from the earth as one of the first Amanita of the year. It loves to feast on decaying leaf litter but enjoys that of oak trees the most. It used to be classified as the same mushroom as its cousin, the Fall Amanita, but research has determined it is a unique species.

Habitat
Apparently restricted only to California, the spring coccora can be found in woodland settings and coastal forests. It lives in a symbiotic relationship with the coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia), the interior live oak (Quercus wislizeni), blue oak (Quercus douglasii), the Pacific madrone (Arbutus menziesii), and manzanita (Arctostaphylos manzanita), and it's always found in the vicinity of their roots.

General Info

Edibility

While technically edible, the spring coccora is usually avoided by mushroom hunters. That's because it can look incredibly similar to highly deadly species of Amanita, including Destroying Angels (A. ocreata) and Death Caps (A. phalloides).
