Abrothallus er en unik gruppe lav som kun vokser på andre lav. Dette forholdet, kalt lichenikolous, gjør dem fascinerende emner for studier av symbiotiske interaksjoner i naturen. Vanligvis trives de i fuktige, skogkledde miljøer hvor deres vertslav er rikelige.
