Cap 2-8 cm across, round or tongue-shaped to irregular; purple at first, but soon fading to reddish brown, pinkish brown, orangish brown, or tan; surface densely hairy; velvety and plushy. Flesh rather tough and stringy, whitish. Taste sometimes bitter.

Gills decurrent, pale ocher, with notched or serrated edges. Stem 1-2 cm long, 1 cm thick, off-center or lateral; cap-colored or paler; surface dry, densely hairy.
