Fruiting Body
Fruiting body medium sized. Cap 5-12 cm across, hemispherical, flattening when expanded; buff to dark purplish gray or brown, with a paler margin; surface dry, covered with white to brown scales. Flesh soft, fleshy, white.
Gills
Gills sinuate, whitish to cream, crowded. Stem 3-10 cm long, 0.5-3 cm thick, cylindrical, curved; pale cap-colored or pinkish buff; with a ring zone, and small, pale to brownish scales below. The species is saprobic; it grows singly or in small groups and clusters on dead and decaying wood, stumps, and fallen logs. Spore print white.
