Phaeophyscia er en gruppe laver kendt for deres unikke symbiose mellem svampe og alger. Disse laver optræder ofte i nuancer af grå eller brun og kan trives i forskellige miljøer, herunder byområder. Phaeophyscia har en særlig evne til at absorbere forurenende stoffer fra luften, hvilket gør dem nyttige som indikatorer for luftkvalitet.
