Is the Fomitopsidaceae poisonous?
Is the Fomitopsidaceae poisonous?
There are many widely consumed mushrooms in the Fomitopsidaceae family, some of which are toxic to part of the population, such as chicken-of-the-woods (Laetiporus sulphureus), conifer chicken of the woods (Laetiporus conifericola), and western hardwood sulphur shelf (Laetiporus gilbertsonii). Some people experience gastrointestinal discomfort after eating these mushrooms, and a small number of people suffer serious adverse reactions, including emesis and fever. These mushrooms usually grow on the wounds of trees, mainly oaks, followed by eucalypti, yews, and some conifers. When you find such mushrooms, do not collect or eat them. Also, those edible mushrooms must be cooked in the right way. If you experience discomfort after ingesting them, seek medical help as soon as possible.
