The crusty russula grows near deciduous trees such as oak and hickory. This mushroom is particularly attractive to the species of so-called pleasing fungus beetle (Tritoma angulata) that feeds on its fruitbody. The crusty russula is similar to the better-known Russula virescens (the Green-cracking russula), but it’s generally much paler.
