Fairy pins (Phaeocalicium polyporaeum) grows on the fruitbodies of mushroom species like Trametes versicolor and Trichaptum biformis. The tiny black whiskers it forms on the surface of these polypores are sometimes called “fairy pins.” They may be hard to distinguish without a magnifying glass!
