The Ugly milk-cap has a rather messy appearance, which has led to the common name. The genus name, Lactarius, refers to the milky latex these mushrooms produce if damaged. Though not immediately toxic, the ugly milk-cap is suspected to be carcinogenic, so it should not be consumed.
