A species of Exidiopsis, Also known as Frost beard
The fungus that forms hair ice grows among cracks in the bark of dead trees. It is one of the few organisms that can fully digest the cellulose in wood. The iconic "hair ice" is not actually fungus but a result of the fungus' interaction with the wood and water that appears when temperatures drop below freezing. Each strand of ice contains traces of the fungus's metabolic waste products.
