Stocking webcap is identified by the stocking-like veil that envelops the lower part of its stalk even after the mushroom matures. The epithet Cortinarius name means "curtain" and was given for the additional veil that covers the mushroom's gills before it matures. Stocking webcap gives off an unpleasant, camphor-like aroma and grows among broad-leaf trees like oak, hazel, and especially beech.
