Dapped webcap

Cortinarius bolaris

A species of Cortinar

This picturesque mushroom can be found sprouting beneath birch trees in late summer to early autumn. The reddish cap of the dapped webcap (Cortinarius bolaris) acquires a spotted or dappled-looking surface as the red scales separate, revealing the whiter cap surface underneath. Be careful; not only is the species itself poisonous, but it also looks similar to those that contain even deadlier toxins.
