Southern beech Amanita

Amanita nothofagi

A species of Amanita mushrooms

Found predominately in New Zealand, Australia, and a few parts of China, the southern beech Amanita (Amanita nothofagi) is a unique find on the floors of birch forests. The distinctly warty appearance of the cap makes it unique from other Amanita family members, but caps that have lost their warts can be easily confused with other species.

Habitat of Southern beech Amanita
Southern beech Amanita is an endemic fungus of New Zealand. It is found in woods and wooded areas where it's primarily associated with the southern beech (Nothofagus spp.), and New Zealand myrtle species - kanuka (Kunzea ericoides) and manuka (Leptospermum scoparium). It grows on the ground, near the roots of trees, where it exists in a symbiotic relationship in which the tree and the fungus feed each other essential nutrients.
