Description
Easily confused with other small, brown mushrooms, the common fieldcap is one of few that grows in springtime in various countries around the world. It appears in groups in pasture land, lawns, and other open, grassy areas. And there are many poisonous mushrooms that look extremely similar.

Appearing most commonly in lawns, woodchips, compost piles, and pastures, common fieldcaps can also grow in coastal dunes. They feed on detritus like decomposing plant matter and dung.

Toxicity
Although potentially non-toxic, the common fieldcap is best avoided, especially by inexperienced mushroom hunters. It belongs to the so-called LBM (Little Brown Mushrooms) group of mushrooms and so it is too easy to confuse the common fieldcap with numerous LBMs which are mildly or deadly poisonous.
